No doubt, you are familiar with the words: “You are what you eat” Almost daily, in print, TV or radio,
we are reminded of the connection between what we eat and the level of good health we can expect
to enjoy. A healthful diet - what we eat daily - is known to be an important foundation for wellness.
The nurturing power of food to keep us healthy is not a “new age” concept. The use of food to heal
reaches back generations into the traditions of nearly every culture. However, in todayís modern,
instant messaging- world, with all the electronic “conveniences” slated to render life easier, but actually
making life more complex, we have become victims of “instant eating” - a phenomenon characterized
by grabbing the fastest, best tasting morsel to eat, regardless of its ability to truly nourish us. What
is the outcome of this way of living? There is neither consciousness nor time left to think about
organizing a system of eating to provide the wellness and vitality necessary for functioning with
balance, resilience and calm.

WHAT TO CHOOSE
Change is about choice (so is remaining the same!) and knowledge about the options are critical to
deciding what to choose. In the case of food and eating, the options are many. Asking what may
seem like an annoyingly simple question, “What is food?” can be very helpful. Consider this definition
of food: Anything edible/drinkable that furnishes energy, promotes the growth, repair, and maintenance
of the body’s cells, organs and systems. Does what you eat and drink fit this definition?

Often folks have the mistaken notion that healthful eating means awful or bland tasting “stuff” disguised

as “good for you”. Nothing could be further from the truth! Delicious, healthful food is possible and
attainable once you know how to identify the basic components and prepare them.

The components of food consist of carbohydrate, fat and protein, all necessary for the body to function

efficiently and healthfully. Continues on page 2
