| LINGK: How did you learn about ONE, what was the initial impact, and what inspired you to become involved? ELAINE: I am a member of Bread for the World (BFW), a faith based advocacy group which is one of the founding members of the ONE Campaign. Shortly after ONE was launched in 2004, BFW President David Beckmann told me about it because he knew the campaign would speak to me. I was looking for a way to engage college students in the work of BFW, and the ONE Campaign afforded me the perfect opportunity. In Fall 2004, I immediately set to work planning a ONE event for local college students before ONE white bands and T-shirts were even available. A local college student designed a T-shirt for us and over 300 students came to what I have been told was the first ONE event in the country. I take seriously Jesus command to care for the least of these, our brothers and sisters. To me, that is one of the central messages in the Gospel. Matthew 25:31-46 is my inspiration to do advocacy work on behalf of the least of these. Continues on page 2 |
