LINGK: What is the ONE organization all about, what
does the ONEarm band represent?

ELAINE: ONE is an effort by Americans to rally Americans,
ONE by ONE, to fight the emergency of hunger, extreme
poverty, and global disease. ONE is 2.4 million people from
all 50 states and more than 100 of the nation's most well-
known and well respected non-profit, advocacy and
humanitarian organizations. Reaching across political
divides, ONE members ask our elected leaders to do more
to helpAmerica lead the world in saving millions of lives in
the world's poorest countries.” ONE is about what binds us,
rather than what divides us. ONE is about our common
humanity. The ONE white band shows our unity with the
least of these, our brothers and sisters. It reminds me that
ONE voice can make a difference and when millions of voices
are joined together in unison, we can change the world.
LINGK: How did you learn about ONE, what
was the initial impact, and what inspired
you to become involved?

ELAINE: I am a member of Bread for the World
(BFW), a faith based advocacy group which is
one of the founding members of the ONE
Campaign. Shortly after ONE was launched in
2004, BFW President David Beckmann told me
about it because he knew the campaign would
speak to me. I was looking for a way to engage
college students in the work of BFW, and the
ONE Campaign afforded me the perfect
opportunity. In Fall 2004, I immediately set to
work planning a ONE event for local college
students before ONE white bands and T-shirts
were even available. A local college student
designed a T-shirt for us and over 300 students
came to what I have been told was the first ONE
event in the country.

I take seriously Jesus’ command to care for
the least of these, our brothers and sisters. To
me, that is one of the central messages in the
Gospel. Matthew 25:31-46 is my inspiration to
do advocacy work on behalf of the least
