GREEN TIP:
1. Substituting just one CFL for a tradition bulb will keep 1/2
ton of CO2 out of the atmosphere over the life of the bulb. CFL
bulbs use 66% less energy than incandescent bulbs and can
last up to 15 times longer. If every household changed from
using 5 regular bulbs to compact fluorescents it would be the
equivalent of taking 8 million cars of the read for one year.

2. Unplug your cell phone charger when you're not using
it. Standby power, also called Vampire power, refers to the
electric power consumed by electronic appliances in a standby
mode. A very common electricity vampire is a power adapter
built on a plug with no power switch. However, while this
consumption of power is used to provide functions for
appliances such as remote controls and digital clocks to the
user, most of the power consumed is considered wasted.

3. Power strips like adapters draw power. Even if nothing is
plugged into them the little lighted switch is drawing .25 to 1.25
watts. Turn off the power strip – after you've turned off other
electronic devices – and you're saving energy.

4. Look on the bottom of your electricity bill to see if they
have an option for you to purchase green or alternative
energy. Check with your local electricity provider to see if
they provide green energy. But energy certificates or carbon
off-sets. A carbon offset organization reduces the net carbon
emissions of individuals or organizations by developing
programs that reduce greenhouse gasses. Some of the
projects they may invest in are tree planting, renewable
energy, or energy conservation.

5. Toxic detergents for your dishwasher and sink run
through your pipes and into our drainage system that lead
directly to our rivers, lakes, and streams. Use non-toxic,
blodegradable detergents around the house.
Is your home environmentally friendly?

Sure, you may recycle but there’s a lot
more you can do to help preserve and
protect the environment—starting right
in your own home. Finding out how is
easy and entertaining. In The EcoZone
Project, a new series produced by
EcoMedia and IMG, celebrities lead by
example when they open their homes
to host Daisy Fuentes and her “Green
Team” of experts. The “green” make-
over includes cost-saving “green tips”
that you can replicate at home. Animated
on-screen graphics make learning fun.
