As a kid growing up in a single headed household, I can still recall how
much mom relied on the help and kindness of neighbors, friends and family members, to help fulfill the daunting tasks of parenting two young children.
it was not unusual that after letting ourselves in after school, a neighbor
or two would take a peek at us to make sure that we were OK—and not
flooding the apartment while doing the occasional laundry load (with
exorbitant amounts of detergent), dancing across the cocktail table (to the
tune of the “Bat-man and Robin” theme song, circa 1966) or eating strange
combinations of chocolate bars, fruits and the occasional mayonnaise
sandwich, (which I am sure you can imagine wrecked havoc on a 10 year
olds digestive system.
It's funny, but as I fondly recollect those wonderful iconic kid-ventures that
my brother and I still laugh about (and will probably continue to do so into
old age), that what I am most thankful for are the folks we referred to as
the “elders”, key people hand-picked by mom (and for us, extensions of the
long arm of the “wrath of mom”) who mercifully administered the occasional
spoonful of what we called the “Pink Stuff”, (today better known as Pepto-
Bismol), help to keep us on the long and narrow and most importantly
out of harms way.
Its was the idea, that even as adults most of us create and rely on wonder-
ful circles of support (which in most instances include friends, mentors,
neighbors and teachers) for guidance and wisdom that for this issue, inspired us to seek court with the “elders of the land”, today, better known as the
experts. So if you are one of the millions of Americans wondering how to
