On marriage. . .
On a personal level, Kerri, who about 2 years ago married fellow comedian
Ron McGehee and is now the proud parent
of baby Lucy, tells us that
her biggest misconception
about marriage was thinking that it wouldn't
be
hard. “I really thought that I would be dancing in the
kitchen like those
other couples you see on TV.
Earlier on, my joke was. . . that in premarital
counseling
they didn't warn me that there would be a man living in my
house
and that I would have to share closet space with
him.
You really, really
need to know that this is one of
the hardest things that you'll ever have
to do. And I
know now that if we did not have God, one of us would
be in
jail right now. So many couples seem to think that
they are the only ones
struggling because no one is
talking about it. Ron and I really try to be
honest. We have faults, we fall down - I was hormonal for 9 months and
I think geez, I should
have been locked-up! But now I know, that
there's
nothing you can't heal from, and there's nothing
through God we
can't conquer.
On motherhood. . .
I didn't believe
that a simple shower would become such a luxury. I
am
just thinking, it's just a shower you know, but now
I look up and it's like,
did you take a shower today? and I definitely didn't believe that someone
would projectile vomit on me and I would be OK with it. But I also didn't
believe that I would fall so madly in love with her so
quickly. I just thought
that I would be bouncing back
to
work within two weeks, but now basically
if I get a
good
hygiene day I am happy. My mentality has
completely
changed. Today my career is secondary
and I try to
keep my husband
first. I used to be a really
driven,
career minded woman, but now those
things
don't matter as much. Now I do what's best for my family.
On Hollywood. . .
You know, we had a meeting of all the Christians in Hollywood and four
people showed up. . . that's how I met Mel Gibson ( laughing). I think
that the tide is fully turning, there are now things like Fox Faith and other
movie studios are beginning to say hey! Christians are not buying booze
and drugs they are buying movie tickets, and we should make some films
that are family friendly. Sometimes I do get really sad because a lot of films
marketed as family films today are rather questionable and in all honesty,
I wouldn't take my kids to see them. But if there were more Christians in
the production end of things - writing, directing and producing we would
have more creative control. That's what I feel that my husband Ron and
I are fighting for. Ron is a writer, and eventually we would like to produce
our own projects, so that we know the quality is first of all excellent and
secondly something we can all be proud of. My advice to Christians
wanting to come to Hollywood is to come. We need you. . . but be sure
to come with the right mission and the right attitude, not just to do it for
yourself because it's not as glamorous as you think. You won't get picked
up by a limo the minute you get to L.A - but if you are willing to live on
ramen noodles from the dollar store, then I guess it's OK. You know,
I joke about that in my act, but the truth is, when I first started in
comedy that was no joke - I really lived that.
So if you're coming for
the right reasons we definitely need you here, but make sure that
you are excellent at your craft.
